At the outbreak of the Spanish-American war Spain owned 2 colonies in the Americas 1.)Puerto Rico and more importantly 2.)Cuba.However,Spain had many colonies in Central and Southern America like Venezuela and Chile which gained their independence in the 1800's.They also had colonies in the Philippines and in Guam.I hope that answered your question!!
