Remember that the colonies had a lot of diversity in religion, with many dissenting or minority groups in England (Puritans, Quakers, Catholics) playing a large role in different colonies (eg Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Maryland). In New York City the Dutch Reformed church remained important.
The First Great Awakening led to growth in Baptist, Presbyterian and Methodist church membership. After the revolution these churches continued to grow.
