Let's take a young man (about 20) from a Nordic country who wants to volunteer in the waffen SS.
What are his motives? I believe they were quite different from today's neo-nazis?
What is he required to do to be accepted? Health, physical fitness, intelligence, some proof of ethnic background?
What choice did he have if he wanted to serve in specific branch of the army, like the infantry, or tank troops?
What was training like?
For the first question, it was rarely a case of being a Nazi. Before Hitler many people in Europe through the 20's and 30's feared a communist take over. The Soviet Union was seen as a massive threat to Western Europe. So when Nazi Germany went to war with the Soviet Union they found many willing volunteers who were willing to fight against the Soviet Union. For many it was seen as battle between the evils of Communism and Fascism and in many people's eyes Fascism and the Nazis were the lesser of the two.
This is a series called "Nazi Collaborators" that was made a few years back. This is part of the episode on Leon Degrelle, a Walloon who joined the SS and led his own SS unit made up of Walloons. The part of note however, is when they interview former members of the unit and they ask why he joined. Predictably he said "to fight communism".
