A relative of mine is on the war memorial in Ypres, due to dying in the battle of Gallipoli. He was in the Durham Light Infantry and his surname was Wetherhill. Under what conditions would he have likely died?

As per title really. He died in WW1 and is remembered on the large memorial in Ypres. I have been studying my families history and due to the families department involvement in WW1 its something that has piqued my interest. I also had a great grandfather who was captured and sent to Wahn, and a great uncle who died along with his son, by family legend, on the same day. It is also said by my oldest family members he died in his father's arms.

The Commonwealth Grave Commission lists one Joseph Wetherhill, but he is on the Helles Memorial in Gallipoli and served in the 9th Bn. West Yorkshire Regiment http://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/casualty/684263/WETHERHILL,%20JOSEPH

Assuming he was actually killed in action on the date listed, he probably was killed by artillery or sniper fire somewhere in the area around Scimitar Hill. However, it is also likely that he died of wounds received during the bloody August 21st assault on the hill.
