At the beginning of the English Civil War why did Charles II chose to raise his flag at Nottingham?

by MoodyGrumpyDwarf

Did this result in a large about of the royalist force being from Nottingham?

That would be Charles I.

Well, London was strongly for Parliament, so the King had to rally his troops somewhere else. Why Nottingham in particular I don't know, except it is rather central in England.

As to the royalist forces, well men from all parts of the country served on either side, though to generalise the West (Cornwall particularly) Wales and the North were strongly royalist and London and the East strongly for Parliament.
