What were some of the first (and later) units that we would identify as "Special Forces"? What were their missions like?

One of the most cited examples of early special forces would be Alexander the Great's rock climbers used at Sogdian Rock. A mountain fortress was so difficult to siege directly that a volunteer unit was picked for a specific (special) task of scaling the mountain fortress at night in order to make the defenders believe they flew up there; as the peak they reached was believed to be impossible to reach without being able to fly.
