Are there any good books written by Japanese WW2 veterans?

I'm looking for something from WW2 from the perspective of a Japanese soldier. Specifically something I can read in English.

I recommend So Sad to Fall in Battle by Kumiko Kakehashi to a lot of people. It's the story of Tadamichi Kuribayashi, the commander of Japanese Forces during the Battle of Iwo Jima, and it's very readable and accessible. It was later used as the basis for the film Letters from Iwo Jima.

One other book I highly recommend, more so if you are familiar with Studs Terkel and his oral history, The Good War, is Japan at War by Haruko Taya Cook and Theodore Failor Cook. It's a collection of oral histories from people ranging from Japanese women who worked in armament factories, people who were forced to flee their homes due to bombing, and Japanese combat veterans. Well worth your time.

Both the books I recommended are extremely accessible and well written in English, so you won't need to worry about any language barriers in reading either. Hope this helps!

If you are into IJN operations I can't recommend Requiem for Battleship Yamato by Yoshida Mitsuru enough.
