Was Napoleon really that short?

He was actually a bit tall for his time, approximately 5'7" if I recall, it was just a difference in French and English measuring systems. 5'2" with the French system. It also didn't help that he hired people taller than he as bodyguards as well.

No.

Apparently the only way we can surmise that the urban legend started that Napoleon was short was because of the difference between English and French Imperial units, which led to his height seeming small by British figures.

Either that or period political cartoon caricatures, which normally feature cartoonishly small characters, really stuck in the public memory.

In reality Napoleon was of average-to-tall height for the time.

No. It refers back to the thing that the british and french had different measuring back in the day. The british inch was shorter than the french one, which then gave us today the image that Napoleon was short (see the Winner writes History).

Iirc he was actually larger than most grenadiers of the time (this last part could definatly be wrong, its at least 3-4 years since i last thought about that).
