Was "The Prince" by Machiavlli satire?

by mercime1993

I heard an interesting quote that The Prince may be satire iwas curious however googling leads to small essay snippets that state it's a possibility. Is the "satire argument" valid?

This is an interesting question, and one that has been asked before. Those prior discussions might have relevant information.

There are a lot of theories on why Machiavelli wrote The Prince. One of the most agreed upon theories is that Machiavelli wrote it in order to appeal to the DiMedici family in order to gain them as a patron. Often, artists, poets, and musicians would appeal to a certain family by creating a piece directed at them, and that family would in turn financially support that artist. The DiMedici family were known to use political force (both physical and financial) in order to gain power. It makes sense that Machiavelli would write a book that would approve of this system of governance. However, we will never know whether Machiavelli truly believed in his theories, if he was writing them for the sole purpose of securing patronage from the DiMedicis, or if it was written in an entirely different context as a satire piece. All theories are valid.
