From daily necessity's to luxury's, was life that different for the average person? And in the occupied zone was Paris much different from the rest of the country?
Keep in mind "free France" for most of the war consisted of France's former colonies and they were governed as such; so really there wouldn't not have been a huge difference.
Now life in the French state was a bit different the Germans were notorious for plundering countries and France was no exception. Large amounts of food was taken especially grain ( I wanna say 20% but I can't find the exact quote at the moment). This meant rationing had to be introduced. The occupation authorities limited the daily calorie intake to 1,300 in both France and Belgium. The French resources were taken, it was estimated that Germany used around 40% of France's resources at this point. Petain's Vichy France was also made to pay occupation costs which amounted to 18 million reichsmarks a day. This caused huge financial strain on the people living in Vichy. Petain also ruled as a theoretical dictator as he had abolished the republic and not established a new form of government. He created a personality cult (though he eventually became a figurehead behind men like Pierre Laval). Repressive laws were enacted against Jews and workers were forcibly drafted into service for the German war machine.
