In With Musket and Tomahawk Vol I: The Saratoga Campaign and the Wilderness War of 1777 Michael O. Logusz tells the story of Pittsfield, Vermont.
In one instance 400 armed women rallied to defend Pittsfield, Vermont. That day the men were off pursuing a raiding party which had previously attempted to attack the town. Warned that another sizable Loyalist and Indian force with British advisers was approaching Pittsfield, the women quickly mustered in defense. Throughout the day they successfully battled the enemy force. Of significance is that this was the only time in America's history that an entire battle was fought on one side solely by women.
