Weirdest inheritance ever? What is this and what should I do with it?

by Wheel-of-fish

Inherited this from a family friend. It reads "J. Ward, to the queen and royal family, 5&6 Leichester Square." It is sitting in my garage now, and I am not sure of the value, or what in the world to do with it. Help!!!

It looks like a perambulator to me - perhaps even a gas-proof world war I one.

This is a type of 'invalid carriage', known in the UK as a 'Bath Chair'. It's generally accepted that the name comes from its use in the spa town of Bath, where it was used by patients taking spa cures. (Bath has been a spa town since Roman times. The Roman baths have been preserved, and are well worth a visit if you're ever in the area.)

J Ward was in business in Leicester Sq, London, from around 1845 to 1903. This antiques site shows an invalids chair from the same manufacturer, and gives a little background. http://www.lapada.org/antiques/d/19th-century-invalids-chair-j-ward/158970
