New York city was growing rapidly at the time but a large factor of it rising to the top was it being Britain's base of operations during the seven years war. Whether by being given contracts or making and selling personal objects New York prospered from the presence of the army. It boosted industry and put lots of capital into the city. Also the news had to go through new York first which would of boosted it ahead of both Boston and Philadelphia.
