What are some of the more odd medical practices/developments around the time of World War One?

by TheAmazingJuicyBeast

I am interested in finding out some of the more odd medical practices and developments of world war one. By odd I mean things that would be considered strange now or at the time of world war one (1910 to 1920 preferably). I would like replies that are sourced but those that aren't would be appreciated.

My great-grandmother was a nurse during World War One for the United States and she had a nurse's handbook that I now have. One of the recommendations in the book is to jam soap under your fingernails in order to keep grime and bacteria out.
