Did they have germophobes before we discovered germs?

I don't believe I have ever heard of a person being obsessively clean in ancient times. Did such a thing exist, or is it a modern psychosis?

The miasma theory of disease was predominant before germs were discovered. This held that foul smells carried disease, making people aversed to things such as stagnant water, cess pools, and, often, poor people.
