I'm writing a paper on Sino-Soviet Relations and I would like some secondary source recommendations. I'm fine right now on primary sources, I've already licked soviethistory.org clean and I'm still trudging through the vast amount of primary sources in the Wilson Center Archive. So, right now I'm looking for some articles or maybe a book or two on the subject.
(I do have access to my university's library and database, I could search for this myself, I just wanted some recommendations first.)
Are you looking for a particular period or a synoptic overview?
All of these are fairly useful for the different dimensions they look at :
Ginsburgs, George and Carl Pinkele, The Sino-Soviet territorial dispute, 1949-64 (New York: Praeger Publishers, 1978)
Gittings, John, Survey of the Sino-Soviet Dispute, a commentary and extracts from the recent polemics 1963-1967 (London: Oxford University Press, 1969)
Low, Alfred, The Sino-Soviet Dispute, an analysis of the polemics (London: Associated University Presses Inc., 1976)
This one book is very good for an overview, particularly the ideological side, it has must more recent historiography and benefits from access to Soviet archives since the collapse of the Soviet Union :
Luthi, Lorenz, The Sino-Soviet split: Cold War in the Communist World (Princeton: Princeton University Press, 2008)
Really good for a very general and basic overview:
Quested, Rosemary, Sino-Russian relations (Boston: George Allen & Unwin Ltd, 1984)
Useful article on how Nuclear Weapons helped shaped relations:
Chao-wu, Dai, ‘The Development of China's Nuclear Weapons and the Rupture of Sino-Soviet Relations (1954—1962)’, Contemporary China History Studies, 27.0 (2006) 1-16 http://en.cnki.com.cn/Article_en/CJFDTOTAL-DZSY200103014.htm [Accessed 20 March 2013]
Good article on how the ideological differences straigned the realtionship: Shen, Zhihua and Yafeng Xia, ‘The Great Leap Forward, the People’s Communes and the Sino-Soviet Split’, Journal of Contemporary China, 20.72 (2011) 861-880 http://0www.tandfonline.com.wam.leeds.ac.uk/doi/abs/10.1080/10670564.2011.604505 [Accessed 8 February 2013]
