I assume there were always collectors or whatever who were interested in antiquities, but how did archaeology become an academic discipline that we could use to learn about the past? Raiders of the Lost Ark is on TV and it got me thinking about archaeology.
I would recommend reading Bruce Trigger's "A History of Archaeological Thought". He goes back into antiquity and how people become interested in the past and started archaeology.
