Two groups of native people, called the Taino and the Caribs. At the time of Spanish settlement the Caribs were prone to raid the Taino and were considered more violent.
The Taino population died out over the first decades of Spanish settlement (due to exposure to European diseases, overwork and social dislocation). There are people of Taino descent still on the islands (courtesy of mixed marriages). The Carib population also declined substantially, but some full blooded Carib people remain.
The precipitous decline in the native populations was the reason for the start of the African slave trade.
