It must have been obvious that they were losing. Were they just trying to tire out the Allies enough to get a conditional surrender?
Well for starters, look what happened after WW1, losing would mean even worse consequences.
And at what point do you mean? Before the Battle of Ardennes? After? Stalingrad?
