I understand a lot of it had to do with the conditions of the Treaty of Versailles, but on more of a societal/cultural level, how did conservative revolutionaries like Ernst Junger become so popular?
As a side question, where did they draw their inspiration from?
Basically fear of a Russian style communist revolution in Germany moved the country more to the right. This fear caused many industrialists and Junkers to back right wing parties to counter the growing Communist and socialist movements that grew in power and influence after WWI and the fall of the monarchy. Joachim Fest's biography of Hitler spends a lot of time going into this situation and how it fueled support for The Nazis and other rightwing groups after the war.
