In US History we always read about Christian pilgrims settling the USA. When did Muslims start immigrating to the United States? What about Jews? Hindus? What drove different religions and cultures to the New World? Did they have regional tendencies when they were choosing where to settle? Thanks guys!
Luis de Carabajal y Cueva was an ethnic Jewish explorer. His parents converted to Catholicism. Joachim Gans was part of an early Walter Raleigh expedition in 1584. Early Jews in the United States were primarily Sephardic. German Jews immigrated in the mid 19th century and the big wave started in the late 19th century.
Early Muslim history in America is less well established. There were probably a few Muslims that came to the United States early on and some of the slaves were likely Muslim. The biggest waves of Muslim immigration are relatively recent, though you of course have Black-Americans that converted to Islam.
The same is more or less true for Hindus. Indian immigration is relatively recent, though there were some earlier immigrants. United States v. Bhagat Singh Thind is kind of a fascinating case in hindsight.
