Why did Dutch become so distinct?

by Kakya

Why did Dutch become distinct enough to be it's own language when other medieval dialects of German didn't shift as far apart? Does it have to do with French influence?

Dutch isn't descended from German. It's descended from Old Low Franconian, which is simply another Germanic language, that came from Proto-Germanic.
