How did Franklin Pierce not have a vice president for most of his term in office?

William King was his vp when he came into office, but from 1853-57 he had no vp.

William Rufus King died a few weeks into the administration. The Constitution at that time had no provision for filling a vacancy in the Vice Presidency.

Vice Presidents who succeeded to the presidency (like John Tyler and Millard Fillmore) also had no vice president for the remainder of their term.
