I have found very little scholarship on this issue, and what I have found states that his religious inclination was unclear. Is this true?
The encyclopedia of Islam's entry on Timur states "in belief, he was Sunnī, with a strong reverence for the family of the Prophet."
The entry was written by Beatrice Manz who is an expert in Timurid rule, so I would take that as definitive.
