Are mud/clay bricks flammable? Could a Roman-era settlement in Syria have burned down?

Bricks are not flammable. The stuff inside the brick building may be however, so it is entirely possible for one to burn down complete with some degree of structural collapse depending on fire damage and construction. For a modern example, consider the World Trade Centers. Steel is not flammable, but the fire was able to consume material inside the building, resulting eventually in structural failure and collapse.
