During the American Prohibition, was root beer really a popular alternative? was it sweet?

This isn't your everyday question, but I wasnt able to find any information on it. I'm interested in the history of root beer, I know.

From my understanding alcoholic sassafras flavored drinks were popular prior to prohibition. When alcohol became illegal, root beer may have been an easy alternative to non-alcoholic beer in terms of production and it probably tasted just as good. There is a root liqueur that claims to be a throwback to pre-prohibition recipes (called ROOT), but I also believe that beers were made with sassafras flavorings.
