When/why did King become superior to Prince?

by [deleted]

Prince is derived from the latin princeps (primary citizen) which Augustus Caesar used as his title. From then on princeps and prince became the general title for rulers. At what point did it become the term for royal family members and king become the title for rulers?

hi! more input on this point is welcome; meanwhile, get started on this earlier discussion

Why do we use prince as a word for the son of a king but also kind of synonymous with king?
