Is there a reason why Obama is both an African and Japanese surname?

Same linguistic base? Obama clan descendant migration? Just by chance?

You could ask r/linguistics about this one.

It's entirely possible for unrelated languages that allow similar syllable constructions to have similar words at times- "bo" can mean "come" in Hebrew (בּוֹא) but "go" in Tamil (போ). Though they're not related languages, such a syllable is legal in each language and they both do make use of it.

I know it's a simple example, but perhaps this is the case for Obama in Japanese and the other language.

If you want to read more about why some words are valid in some languages and not valid in others, like why you can't start a word with "mb" in English but you can in Swahili, you should look up phonotactics.
