Are you under the impression that Tourette Syndrome causes people to swear uncontrollably? Only a small percentage of people with Tourette Syndrome do that. Most have simple tics like small noises, blinking, shrugging, that kind of thing. In addition, most people with Tourette symptoms experience them in childhood and adolescence, with a smaller percentage continuing into adulthood. The swearing phenomenon is grossly exaggerated, and often comes with comorbid issues that I'm guessing throughout history would make someone's life a lot harder than just getting in trouble for cursing at the wrong time.
