I am searching for journals publishing quality papers (in general). I have absolutely no idea where to look and this wikipedia list does not help.
Also, do you know of any cheap or free way to access these journals for people outside academia ? Science journals are especially expensive, so I am guessing it must be the same for history journals.
Edit : I was asking about a general way to access history papers and JSTOR seems to be the answer to that. Unfortunately, only college librairies seem to offer an access to it (in France). Anyway, further suggestions about Ancient Rome are more than welcome !
The question of which journal is impossible to answer generically. But, there is hope!
JSTOR is the biggest online repository for English-language academic journals and you can access them in one of at least 3 different ways:
Many public libraries now have online access to JSTOR using a library card. Check the libraries of your largest local cities. Even some small towns seem to have network access.
You can access JSTOR free and get 3 articles in rotation every 14 days. Not great if you're doing a paper, but good for the curious.
Most college/university libraries will have terminals open to the public where you can go in and research; periodically make a list of the articles you want and visit and download them from the terminal.
Alternately, you need to specify the kinds of history you are interested in and you may have someone recommend specific journals you can focus on.
AWOL (Ancient World Online) is a daily updated website linking to free online resources on the ancient world (generally Mediterranean, Europe and Near East).
