[META] This is one of the few subreddits that has maintained a high level of quality and professionalism over time, thank you.

by GoNavy_09

Most subreddits generally deteriorate over time, yet this subreddit has maintained itself as a hub of professionalism and quality content. I would like thank each and every member, be them professors or just individuals who are passionate about history, for making this a place for positive thought and discussion.

This thread has been removed due to bootlicking.

A_WILD_SLUT_APPEARS

The mods deserve a huge congratulations on this one as well. The flaired members are huge sources of content that is always well-thought out, well-sourced and comprehensive, but the mods take a lot of time to remove comments that are none of these things and just come from the average redditor. So great job mods on /r/AskHistorians and thank you for your work in keeping one of my favorite subs clean!

vertexoflife

The mods depend heavily on everyday users to ask the questions you ask, to ask follow-up questions, to help keep the sub civil, and to report comments, so it wouldn't be possible without the readership too :)

van_Zeller

Actually you're incorrect. This sub has improved, markedly. If you go into the archives, you will see that the standard has increased.

Enleat

I adore this subreddit.... it's my number 1 subreddit to go whenever i need something for history...

That being said, does anyone else sometimes feel that they take this subreddit for granted?

Idunno, sometimes it feels like i am, since there really is no other forum like this on the internet with this level of moderation, quality and comittment.

UnoriginalMike

All hail the mods.

Without their tireless effort this sub would be nothing but Wikipedia articles and conjecture.

meowlolcats

Hmm something I find frustrating but also valuable about this sub is that when people like me make stupid useless comments, they get downvoted to oblivion and/or removed, keeping threads jam packed full of relevant information. I haven't yet had anything meaningful to contribute, and by not rewarding stupid behaviour, this sub has relegated me to an approving observer and stayed true to its roots. Well done.

SockMonkeh

I'd like to thank the mods for their thick skin. I've seen too many subreddits with active mods turn sour because the mods are trying to please everyone. This subreddit has clearly defined rules and the mods enforce them fairly but strictly.

THUGLIFEGANGSTER1998

Woah woah, let's see some sources to back up that narrative.

BandarSeriBegawan

When AskHistorians has been around for 20 years can we start asking about where it all went wrong?

topperharley88

I don't know, hard to beat the consistency of /r/birdswitharms

nikudan

I agree. I never post here but I read it every day. I could not appreciate the work people put into posts here more than I do.

Dreql

I've never commented on /r/AskHistorians for fear of it being removed, but I also want to say thank you for keeping this subreddit great mods! And to all you historians thank you for the wonderful and informative posts

stanfan114

I blame the moderators for all the quality here.

tayaravaknin

I love this sub, and read it constantly to learn and find sources to read even more.

Thanks to everyone who's helped me along that quest. I may be a polisci major, but I can definitely say that many of the things I've read here apply to my studies and my life, and I can't thank everyone enough for the work they put in!

toxicomano

This is the /r/AskHistorians version of a party thread. We're all cutting loose, yucking it up, and occasionally swearing.

Thank you, Mods, and contributors for the work you have put in to maintain this subreddit. Seriously, I truly appreciate the level of quality here. There was a question asked in /r/history the other day and the answers were all jokes and speculation. I know we're all glad that hasn't spilled over into this sub.

Zelcron

I majored in history, graduated with honors and awards, etc etc. The fact that I can't really comment on this sub with any kind of confidence is actually really refreshing and appreciated. The standard of discourse is just better than anywhere else on reddit.

Mods and community, you guys are doing a bang up job. Keep it up

Chadza

This subreddit is one of the reasons I love the internet.

HalfSaiyan

I just joined this subreddit recently, and I love coming to it a little bit every day and learning something new that I KNOW is accurate information. Thanks to everyone here :)

denshi

This is def* one of the best subreddits on this site.

nthensome

HOORAY!

We are great!

franklymydeer

I think we have to thank the mods for this. They're extremely active, have very clear rules about what is and isn't acceptable, and are ruthless in deleting comments that aren't up to scratch. And I dare say they have to deal with a fair amount of abuse for it, too.

jeffbingham

Until now. You've just brought this sub to the attention of every troll that sees this on /r/all.

Rastafak

Seriously, this subreddit is amazing, thanks to all the mods and contributors.

[deleted]

This is a subreddit that i subscribe to merely to lurk and never, ever comment on. I'm here to learn, not spout nonsense and jokes. I have a degree in biology, and don't know jack about history.

Well, unless it's Texas history, because anybody brought up from pre-school through college in Texas is probably close to an expert in the subject. It was a required semester-long class 3 times before i graduated high school.

gradstudent4ever

I also want to say thank you. I applied for flair and didn't get it, back when I first discovered the sub, and I have always intended to return and do some posts now that I have a better understanding of what is wanted. I'm sorry that the semester got so busy and I ran out of time. I promise to get my act together and try again because I think being a flaired poster in this sub is a great achievement.

I also want to say thank you to the tireless mod team. I was just remarking to someone elsethread that some of reddit's nastier subcultures (who shall remain unnamed out of respect for this sub's attempted neutrality) are just totally absent from /r/askhistorians. In almost every other sub, they brigade and upvote posts that make racist or sexist assertions, and wallow in their own crapulence.

But the tireless mod team here refuses to let the nonsense have a platform as if it were just another valid viewpoint. What is counterfactual and ahistorical gets kicked to the curb, making /r/askhistorians one of the only places on reddit that is free from hate speech...simply because hate speech relies on lies about history, and lies aren't allowed here.

Xoxo,

I really enjoy this subreddit. What I do not enjoy are some of the questions that are literally a Google search away. Or, some of the questions that combine fantasy or movie logic with what the user thinks is a legitimate question.

I'm certain that the mods filter out many of those types of questions already, but the ones that slip through, I groan out loud.

Other than that complaint, this subreddit consistently entertains and intrigues me.

microActive

YOU DIDN'T POST A SOURCE, CLOSE THE FUCKING THREAD

Oliveman6

Still waiting on /r/ShittyAskHistorians

[deleted]

It's the mods and the near complete support of the standards. Jokes aren't tolerated. Statements without citations are dealt with appropriately.

It's been my favorite for a few years now. You can learn things a quick google search won't provide you...which is always nice.

lrich1024

This is the least serious thread I've ever seen in this sub. It's fun to see the mods cutting it up and being funny instead of sternly setting down rules and deleting comments. TIL: mods are people too. :)

evilmushroom

I am not a historian, but I enjoy lurking and reading in this sub. :)

MagillaGorillasHat

I've never contributed any quality content either via post or comment

But I did explain the top level comment rules to a guy and got 51 upvotes, so I got that going for me, which is nice

markevens

Finally a thread I can post in!

In all seriousness, I sincerely thank the moderators and the contributing historians for the high caliber responses. Every day I read some of the threads here and learn so much.

Thanks again.

jatorres

Love the sub, but I think the mods can be a little heavy handed at times...

--frymaster--

seriously. while truereddit threads always seem to dissolve into tangential tv references and inappropriate comparisons to hitler this subreddit is only ever insightful and informed posts mixed with a whole buncha [deleted]s. there's a reason why a third of /r/depthhub seems to come from here.

mods: those of us who lurk appreciate your commitment to quality control.

Why was this comment deleted?

It was unsourced and added nothing to the discussion. - moderator

That seems like a dangerous policy to me. Why not just let people post what they want and the reader can work out what's true based on their own knowledge? Anything else just smacks of censorship. Reddit internet freedom 1984 Big Brother NSA police state thought police blah blah

I salute the mods for their patience with all this stuff...

AustNerevar

So is this an anything goes thread? I'm surprised this wasn't removed! Or was it planned?

Thank you mods, for doing all that you do here. This sub is a wonderful resource because of it. It's probably the sub most deserving of becoming default. But God save us all, if that ever happens.

[deleted]

It's one of the few subs that is heavily moderated with no complaints that I've heard of.

That's pretty astounding when you think about how little it takes for some people to bitch about anything.

AnatomyOfAMurder
scooter_reddit

I greatly appreciate all the work you guys do, please keep it up!

LaurenceB

In all seriousness, I've learned a "shit ton" from this subreddit. Thank you to all the contributors that post quality answers to my shitty questions.

SkytheDrop

What other subs are more professional like this one?

circlekirk

Could you please cite your sources backing that claim?

hedgeborncerebellum

Just the other day I was thinking the same thing. I'm not the biggest history fan, but this subreddit really has some good mods. I don't know how mods are chosen but I noticed that mods here tend to have a badge that shows they know their stuff.

Question: How are mods chosen, here and on other subs?

Aaaand now I've subbed.

zoidberg1339

Hear, hear.

Leto2k

Very good subreddit indeed. does anyone have any recommendations for subreddits of similar quality?

ObsoletePixel

I agree. Its a shame because most of my most clever comment ideas are here and /r/AskScience

Regardless though, that's a small discrepancy. I love reading threads, and I'm very satisfied with the moderation of this sub, and I can't wait for more!

Banh_mi

This one and, believe it or not, /r/morbidreality!

Radijs

One of the very rare moments I can actually make a top level comment in this subreddit wow!

Just wanting to say that this subreddit is one of my favorite 'time wasters' I thoroughly enjoy the detailed and interesting replies the professionals here give to the questions posted. Kudos and upvotes to them.

And the same to the mods who are quite rigorous in enforcing this subreddit's high standards.

iCloud_is_a_joke

I've got nothing to add that hasn't been written before, but nonetheless, thank you all for keeping this subreddit going and fantastically moderated.

Duelingk

The mods really do alot of work in this subreddit. Almost every thread has over a dozen deleted comments to maintain quality.

ponyo_sashimi

cite your sources!!

RuthlessDickTater

I'd just like to say thanks to the historians and the mod team of this sub. The answers are always great, and crap comments are gone pretty quickly.

I'll kind of hijack too, I thought about this the other day and wanted to make a thread here but I'm not sure if it would have been appropriate.

To the historians: How long have you been studying your topic of interest? Does your job have anything to do with your field? The depth of knowledge some people have is incredible. I've always loved WWII history, but what I understand is a drop in the bucket compared to any expert here. I'll read lots of books, but can't retain all of it. Maybe that's part of the problem. Plus, WWII is a pretty broad subject.

[deleted]

Most of reddit has been taken over since the 9gaggers migrated. But this has been the one sub that's stuck through it

Ralfnader66

No problem, esse

Aunvilgod

The mods need to make sure that this post is the last of its kind. META posts are nearly always terrible.

FINGERFUCKMYDICKHOLE

Seriously the mods here are fucking BEAST.

chargon

I think it's lame that comments are deleted instead of hidden. Who knows, maybe you're deleting the new prophet's comment?

FinFihlman

Ironically, your post degrades this sub. I know it's nice to hear compliments but your post is irrelevant and unnecessary, the buzz of a fly in people's ears.

wlantry

be them professors

Yeah, I'm guessing you ain't one... ;)

Smokratez

Could that be because of the low level of interest from the general public?

LearninThatPython

Yuck. Sometimes I think some people go around and do this to gather karma. They go to subs and say "oh look no ass kissing thread in here!" and they know its likely they'll get quite a lot of karma if they make the post. Stupid.

czallo

It has also consistently maintained its left-wing political bias. The mods narrate history how they see it and cite Marxist historians to confirm their narrative.
