When I read his book Freedom from Fear: The American People in Depression and War, 1929 - 1945 I expected it to be a social and cultural history. While brilliant on just about every level, it wasn't about the American people so much as high politics and military strategy. This may seem to be a minor quibble in such a fantastic work, but it would have been nice if more (read 'some') of the book had been devoted to the American People.
