I'm just curious. I go to a fairly conservative private school so teachers make anti-Democrat comments all the time. Beyond the tax thing though, did Kennedy's views and policies align more with the philosophies of the current Republican or Democratic Parties? Or was it a mix of both?
Kennedy, like all political figures, was a person of his own time and place and it is a waste of time to attempt to place him within our own modern political system.
Okay sorry guys but I'm going to attack this as an economist more than anything. Kennedy was a proponent of Keynesian economics (like nearly all 20 and 21st century presidents have been in practice). Keynesian economics requires occasional tax decreases in certain times. It is irrelevant to claim raising or lowering of taxes denotes party in the US political system. Also you can't look at a man or woman in the 1960's and equate their party to the parties today things are radically different.
Frankly your teacher sounds like a moron for his initial claim.
The last Democratic president to actually raise taxes was Lyndon Johnson over 40 years ago.
