Why doesn't Turkey recognize the Armenian Genocide?

by [deleted]

I understand why someone wouldn't be willing to admit to engaging in a genocide but the evidence is irrefutable and overwhelming. What are there arguments against it being a genocide? It's as if you're telling someone the sky is blue and they just refuse to acknowledge it as being blue. Thanks all!

Depending on how you look at some of these factors involved, it's either simple or complicated:

  • Modern Turkey does recognize that there were wide-spread massacres by the Ottomans and under their direction, the Kurds.

  • Modern Turkey as a nation-state did not exist at the time. The Ottomans were defeated and dissolved

  • Genocide is an ugly word, which implies intent to wipe out. The modern Turkish nation-state denies that there was such intent ... and doesn't want to apologize because it wasn't them anyway.

  • The modern Turkish nation-state claims that the (1915, largely) massacres were part-and parcel of WWI and something to do with Tehcir Law. Again: "not us".

From what I can gather every year on Apr 24, there are growing "demonstrations" to publicly support the "We Apologize" petition(s).

And, it was one hundred years ago. And geo-political stances are complicated - for example, Israel apparently doesn't recognize it (although you'd guess they'd be right on it) because they have a delicate alliance with Turkey and they don't want to rock the boat.

Hello! The Armenian Genocide has come up before here. Not to discourage others from answering the question, but I would highly recommend you check out this older thread, especially /u/yodatsracist response to my own comment there.

This question hasn't been removed because it's about time since the early 20th century, only a small subset of which falls under our 20-year rule. However, please stay away from discussion of the more recent political goings-on.

Thanks!
