Why did the Soviet Union stop trying to get to the moon?

by Broke_stupid_lonely

Once the United States made it why did they stop? I would have thought at that point that they had to get there or admit defeat.

Apparently the Soviet aspirations for manned Lunar missions were placed solidly on the shoulders of one Sergei Korolyov, who died like 18mths before Apollo 11. Which is maybe not best answer to your question, because the Soviets did attempt manned missions to moon after Apollo 11, but well history speaks for itself.
