I'm lacking knowledge on this part of history and I'm really curious. What was it? How did it work? How did it effect Europe in the middle ages? How was it related to the Western and Eastern Roman Empire?

I think the question has different answers for different areas. The empire during the 11th century and the empire during the 19th century would have functioned very differently.
