Was the division to end the Korean war by leaving Korea divided into two parts a good one?

The Korean War has never ended.

After WWII the US and USSR split the Korean Peninsula in two, much like was done in Germany. The peninsula destabilized, and eventually war broke out. After years of fighting an armistice was agreed to in July of 1953. This ended the fighting, although both sides (but mostly the north) consider the war to still be going.

The war pretty much broke down to a stalemate, much like WWI, and like "the great war" it didn't end with one victorious winner take all.

I don't think the decision to have 2 separate Korean States could be said to be a good one, or a bad one. It ended massive violence between two warring sides. It also condemned the people of North Korea to horrible conditions.

No it was not. The only "good" thing that came out of it was that North Korea never fulfilled it's mission to take the South.

Korea was already divided in 1945, and the constitution was ratified in 1948, well before the outbreak of the Korean war. Each side developed opposing government ideals, the North Communist and the South Anti-Communist (it was not democratic, for from it.)

The war raged on for 3 years. With massive amounts of casualties. In fact, last two years of the war was a stalemate, hundreds of thousands of soldiers dying to claim at least one more hill, one more kilometer of land before the armistice was signed in 1953. The 38th parallel was turned into a DMZ, there were little land difference, just a zig-zag-like line between the Korean peninsula instead of a straight one.

Just a reminder to potential respondents of this sub's "20-year rule" against the discussion of current events. Accordingly, do confine any responses to events and development up until 1994.

OP, if you'd like a broader discussion that includes current affairs, consider x-posting to a sub specializing in Korean politics.
