In terms of quality of life would it be generally better to be an 12th century English peasant or an Edo period Japanese peasant?

Being an Edo Era peasant was pretty nice. Fairly easy travel, plentiful food, no warfare, cities growing at an exceptionally high rate, culture taking off.

I can't comment on being an English peasant but being an average person in Edo Era Japan was pretty nice. The simple fact that there was no major warfare during that period speaks volumes and more people traveled around Edo Era Japan than any point before it. Edo grew to over a million residents and was probably the largest city in the world.
