Did the other Yue states (Minyue, Ouyue) not desire independence? And how did Nanyue achieve independence from the Han? Was it inevitable for Vietnam to become independent of China?
I will attempt to answer your questions one by one so bear with the long read.
Q1.Did the other Yue states (Minyue, Ouyue) not desire independence?
A1.The major problem with your first question is that there are no sources written by Baiyue people that exist today of what the they thought of the Han dynasty or of its adjacent neighbors.
Most of the information is derived from Han era sources the most famous being the Shiji, did not think highly of Baiyue people and intervened when they saw fit.
The reason why Yue states did not seek independence is mainly because they were already semi Siniczed, population was relatively small compared to the Chinese of the Han dynasty and some were even forcefully relocated.
a.The argument for the semi Sinicization of the Yue states is that the some of the elites were of Sinitic origin.
From Shiji Chapter 31 The Hereditary house of Wu Taibo. Wu Taibo had a younger brother named Zhongyong, both were sons of King Tai of Zhou, his younger brother Jili became king(of Zhou).
From Shiji Chapter 41 The hereditary house of Yue Wang Goujian. Goujian King of Yue,Descended from Great Yu from King Shaokang of Xia from a illegitimate son.
From Shiji Chapter 113 The account of Nanyue. The King of Nanyue was previously known as Chief Commandant(prior to 148 BC this position was called Commandery Commandant)Tuo,was native of Zhending(located in the Warring state of Zhao),of the Zhao family.
Shiji Chapter 114 Account of Dongyue. King Wuzhu of Minyue and King Yao of Donghai were the descendants of King Goujiang of Yue,their surname was Zou.
Shiji Chapter 116 Account of the Xinan Yi(Southwestern barbarians) In the times of King Wei of Chu,Zhuang Qiao was ordered to invade the upper Changjiang,Ba,Shu,Qianzhong and Western regions. General Zhuang Qiao was descended from King Zhuang of of Chu. Reaching Lake Dian the size of 300 li,and the surrounding plains of thousands of li. Forcing the natives to submit to Chu suzerainty and preparing to traverse back to Chu,Qin seized the moment to capture Ba and Qianzhong thus becoming a major obstacle. Zhuang Qiao then decided to adopt barbarian clothes/customs and named himself King of Dian.
b.For smaller population I use 中國人口通史 and 中國人口史.
From 中國人口史 pg 432 http://i.imgur.com/TYFgX3U.png The Nanman that lived in during the Eastern Han from Changsha,Linling,Nanjun,Jiangxia etc and in today's Hunan,Hubei and Jiangxi numbered several one hundred thousands.
From 中國人口史 pg 433 http://i.imgur.com/GIkw7Rz.png If the number of military able Shanyue men is deemed correct then the Shanyue should at least number 200,000-300,000.(However keep in mind this information is based off the Sanguozhi meaning that during the Eastern Han the number would be even smaller.)
From 中國人口通史 pg 154 http://i.imgur.com/rGqe4u5.png Due to pressures from the government to increase taxes in the second year 20,000 Nanman surrounded the city of Chong city,8,000 attacked Yidao therefore after pacification there were no efforts to conduct a census on them.(The latter passage in the book thus concludes that the Nanman of present day Hunan/Hubei must have numbered 200,000).
From 中國人口通史 pg 155 http://i.imgur.com/TdUFBXu.png Using the data from Jinshu Chapter 57 Biography of Tao Huang and the census data from earlier sources the minorities of modern day Guangdong province numbered 50,000 households during the Western Jin,Hainan islanders numbered couple 100,000 people thus these numbered should be the same as Eastern Han. There are many other minorities from today's Jiangxi,Fujian,Taiwan,Hunan,Hubei,Guangdong and Guangxi that didn't have their data recorded. Therefore my estimate(the author's estimate not mine) in the regions that we discussed should number at least 1.5 million people.
From 中國人口通史 pg 155 http://i.imgur.com/cPYIpWK.png From the above data(meaning passages from 94,100,108 and 116 AD) Western Sichuan should have at least 200,000 people.
Compare the Eastern Han census results http://i.imgur.com/e5x4t0H.png?1 Ranging from 21-56 million though in reality the number was quite a bit higher. http://i.imgur.com/FfBSO5h.png?1 Ranging from 22-65 million.
