What prompted our Hunter Gatherer ancestors to begin the "Agricultural Revolution?"

I have seen many different theories on why people went from roaming to staying put and farming. I was wondering if this is a highly debated topic or if there is a widely accepted answer I am unable to find. Thanks!

This will probably be best asked at /r/anthropology

Still the theory i learned was a simple carrying capacity one. A hunter gatherer needs 6400 acres per person, a farmer needs 8000 square feet.

It is still a highly debated topic, and there are many competing theories on the subject.

You can see a list of several different theories on wikipedia (which gives a good idea of the degree of contention): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neolithic_revolution#Agricultural_transition

It's also possible that multiple processes gave rise to settled agriculture at different sites around the world, rather than one universal cause.
