Theory Thursday | Academic/Professional History Free-for-All

by AutoModerator

Previous weeks!

This week, ending in May 1st, 2014:

Today's thread is for open discussion of:

  • History in the academy

  • Historiographical disputes, debates and rivalries

  • Implications of historical theory both abstractly and in application

  • Philosophy of history

  • And so on

Regular participants in the Thursday threads should just keep doing what they've been doing; newcomers should take notice that this thread is meant for open discussion only of matters like those above, not just anything you like -- we'll have a thread on Friday for that, as usual.

I asked a similar question before, but I am curious how the introductory history of archaeology is taught outside the English world. Certainly, we start with Champolleon and do due diligence to Fiorelli, Schliemann and others, but overwhelmingly British archaeologists, like Wooley, Petrie, Evans, Wheeler and Pitt-Rivers. What is the focus outside of the Anglophone world?

Has anyone here used GIS in their research? Is it possible to do it properly without learning a programming language?

Hey guys, this conversation made me want to investigate the claim that Persia changed its name to Iran in an attempt to appeal to Nazi Germany. Everyone cites "Lenczowski. 1944, p. 161", but I have yet to find the actual source. Does anyone know which one of Lenczowski's works they're referencing?
