Need help finding material on the Spanish Civil war.

by Master_Faz

Hello. I have been looking for books or sources about how the Spanish Civil War affected social change for a school project. I haven't had much luck finding books on the subject. I could really use some more sources in English or Spanish to complement the ones I already have.

I think I can help you out on this one. "The Anarchist Collectives" by Sam Dolgoff has a whole section devoted to the Anarchist Revolution in Catalonia, which of course has fascinating material on the social changes there.

Basically, if you're in Catalonia or Aragon, your standard of living rises dramatically, and you run the factories along with your coworkers. Telephone lines in Barcelona were restored two days after the revolution succeeded as was public transportation, which is impressive since the city had been a war zone before that time.

There was still money, but it was used in a fundamentally different way than now (i.e, it was actually used to facilitate exchange instead of profit).

George Orwell, who fought in the Spanish Civil War, has a famous account of his experiences called [Homage to Catalonia] (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Homage-Catalonia-Penguin-Modern-Classics/dp/0141183055/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1399042845&sr=8-1&keywords=homage+to+catalonia) which is an important literary source. It is not an unbiased book, Orwell was an anti-fascist, but it is a very interesting and moving read.
