I don't think there was any American involvement. The US maintained a position of "open door" free trade in China. The abolition of the unequal treaty system and spheres of influence that arose after the Opium and Arrow Wars was one of the main American foreign policy objectives in the late 19th century. The Americans consoled themselves for not being a part of the Chinese game by taking over the Philippines at the end of the century.
