A lot of our words today have origins or roots in Latin. Is there any other language Latin drew from and if so how did we find out?
This really is a question for r/asklinguistics really.
But Latin itself is based on a proto-language called Indo-European.
I found a whole family tree where you can see the position of Latin in relation to other languages. Im not a linguistics expert, so i don't know how credible this portrayal is. I'd greet it with criticism, since the suggested unity of this proto-language doesn't seem realistic to me.
