It might also be worth looking into how Columbus approached the indigenous peoples of the Americas. As far as I know he brought simple presents, things that look nice and have a visible value so that even people who don't know much about the value of money or art can say: "that's shiny, I like that!" He brought brass bells, colorful hats and glass beads and the indigenous people willingly traded these goods and gave him gold, cotton and tamed parrots. So that might have been the first communication between both groups.
