What did the earth look like 50-55 million years ago, not long after the dinosaur extinction event?

Our ancestors were 3 or 4 inches long and living underground, lots of other small mammals and insects as well, but what about birds? Did any animals larger than a foot or two in length make it through? How long did it take the earth to recover from such a massive nuclear winter, and how did life forms thrive and grow? Thank You.
