I've heard that as well as Judea in the south there was a kingdom of Israel in the north. Although everything I've found has been sketchy it sounds as if he was someone of great influence, but who was he and what did he do?
omri was king of israel after he led a revolt against the former dainasty, dont quite remember which one. what he mainly did and was even credited for it in hte bible(which is generally anti israel and pro Judea) was that he bought a mountain/land from a guy named Shemer i think and becuase of that called that place Shomron or in english,Samaria. IN that place he biult his capital, its name like the mountain's which is the last capital of the kingdom of israel'the one that lasted the longest and the most known. He is also described as a great sinner and worse then ll his predeccesors. If you are intersted in specifics, open kings 1 chapter 16,thats the chapter he's mentioned in. source: personal knowledge and bible sorry for bad english and grammer mistakes
