im a big fan of assassins creed and before every game i try to research the time period and the people in it before hand so ill enjoy the game and characters more. We never really covered the french revolution in my school and since the next game is set in it and Im currently learning french i thought I wanted to do some serious studying on it.
What are some things I can read, documentaries and/or movies to watch and people to reasearch for the time period?
Thank you.
My go-to guide for the French Revolution is The Oxford History of the French Revolution, by William Doyle, but it looks like that's going to go into a hell of a lot more detail than you need.
In terms of the Revolution, I think you would need to have a grasp of:
Conditions in pre-Revolution France
Why Louis XVI was an idiot
The Revolution itself, and the periods that followed (the constitutional monarchy, then the republic, the terror, and the rise of Napoleon)
If you want to, perhaps get a copy of Doyle from your local library or something and just skim through it. If you want some fiction to read, Dickens' a tale of two cities is set just after the Revolution. Documentaries and fictional films I can't help you with, sorry.
People you should probably know a little bit about:
Louis XVI
Marie Antoinette
Maximilien Robespierre
I'll admit that Robespierre is my personal favourite of there Revolutionary figures, but if you want to read a rise and fall story dripping with pathos, his is where it's at.
If you need a little more information, I'm more than happy to pull more info from my shelves :)
