Herodotus reports that Scythians (Nomadic people around Russia) used to use it in rituals. I think at one point he describes them burning it under a tent. Earlier written descriptions might exist in East Asia (I have read of some archaeological finds that show its use there for medicinal purposes) but I'm not really aware of any.
