What was an average day like for an Allied soldier in WWII?

by audacias

EDIT: To narrow down, let's say an American infantry, low to mid-rank, fighting around the height of the war in mainland Europe.

Referring to the average Allied soldier's daily routine.

  1. When did they usually wake up? How much sleep did they get?
  2. How many meals did they get per day?
  3. How much spare time did they have? Could they socialize, play cards, play music, write, chat?
  4. How much time was spent walking or patrolling?
  5. What did they usually talk about? (I understand this is more speculative and may not be easy to answer accurately).
  6. How much autonomy did a soldier have? Could they self-direct in day-to-day operations, or did they explicitly follow and wait for orders from superiors?

Any and all answers greatly appreciated. Thank you so much!

That's a really, really broad question. You seriously need to narrow things down more. What country are they from? Which theater of the war are they fighting in? Are they officers or NCOs? Are they of the frontline or behind the lines?

As BreaksFull said, we really need more information. I'd love to answer your question but it would be much easier if you'd provide all the information BreaksFull requested as well as maybe the following - What specialty are you think of? Life was drastically different as a Brazilian Army Signal Officer than it was for a Soviet Infantryman.
